Overview

Home security, as an important service in SmartThings’ IoT smart home system, provides main features including: controlling, monitoring and warning. As the hardwares like cameras and door locks keeps evolving and capturing more data, users are overwhelmed by extensive scattered data from different devices.

When I joined Samsung SmartThings team as a UX design intern in Jan 2024, I was responsible for improving this feature together with 2 other teammates. During the internship, I defined the problems by conducting competitor analysis, and then delivered improvement solutions with wireframes and hi-fi interfaces

By utilizing AI power in data analysis, we improved user’s data management experiences to better meet user needs and deliver added value.

What are the main the main functions of home security?

Control

Activate/pause the home camera or switch angles

Monitor

Access realtime camera view or the recorded clips

Warning

Push alarm notifications when emergency detected

What are the main challenges?

Scenario

complexity

The scenarios change from home to workplace, and services involves multiple users.

Large

amount

of data

The devices detects large amount of data, which makes it tricky for analysis.

Unorganized

information

Different devices store data in different place, which decrease the accesbility of information.

The product I worked on

Reflections on the project

The research was written in a delicate report and the design proposal was affirmed by the product owner. Unfortunately, due to the NDA, I’m unable to share the research and designs I worked on at Samsung Electronics.

However, the experience of working in such a large corporation made me more used to collaborate with cross-functional teams and to communicate ideas effectively with presentations. It also brought me a lot of insights about IoT products and got me deeper understanding of front-end technologies used in the industry.
